Twitter has launched a new campaign to combat deceptive advertisements that “contradict the scientific consensus on climate change.”
Twitter said in an official blog post:
We think that climate denial should not be profited from on Twitter, and that misleading advertisements should not impede from essential discussions about the global problem.
The statement went on to say that ‘authoritative sources,’ such as the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, will guide material selection (IPCC). Twitter clarified:
We understand that false information on climate change might jeopardise efforts to safeguard the environment. We’ll have more to say about our efforts to provide trustworthy, authoritative context to the climate talks taking place on Twitter in the coming months.
Since they have been a significant necessity in recent years, the business claimed that it aims to share more specifics on its intention to “bring credible, authoritative context.” Climate change discussion has increased by more than 150 percent since 2021, according to the site.
The microblogging platform’s recent move is part of a long-term strategy to battle climate change myths and misinformation. Other businesses have adopted similar rules and pledged to follow them to varying degrees.
Twitter asked its users to participate in discussions on climate change, saying:
We all have a role to play in addressing this critical global catastrophe. There are many ways to get involved, from helping with a local environmental group to joining a Twitter Space with environmental experts to learning more about saving our world.
