The UAE has enacted a comprehensive new legislation governing medical items, pharmacies, and pharmaceutical firms. The law seeks to improve the organization, security, and control of the creation and distribution processes.
The law, which was unveiled on Sunday, December 29, includes provisions for medical equipment, pharmaceutical products, healthcare items, biological products, supplements, and cosmetics. It also applies to biobanks and pharmaceutical facilities, including those located in free zones, and establishes a framework for licensing, oversight, and administration. The law also covers ownership transfers and establishes the responsibilities of the Emirates Drug Establishment, Ministry of Health, and municipal governments.
Violations of the legislation may result in disciplinary action, including temporary license suspensions, precautionary closures, license cancellations, and fines of up to AED 1 million for businesses and AED 500,000 for practitioners.
