(Reuters) – On Tuesday, Twitter Inc. CEO Elon Musk announced that the site will be integrating calls and encrypted messages.

Musk announced plans for “Twitter 2.0 The Everything App” last year, saying it would include encrypted DMs, longform tweets, and payments.

“Coming soon will be voice and video chat from your handle to anyone on this platform, so you can talk to people anywhere in the world without giving them your phone number,” Musk said in a tweet on Tuesday.

With the addition of calls, Twitter will be on par with other microblogging platforms like Facebook and Instagram, both of which are owned by Meta (META.O).

While Musk did not specify whether or not calls will be encrypted, he did announce on Twitter on Wednesday that an encrypted version of direct communications would be accessible.

This week, Twitter announced it would begin purging inactive accounts by removing and archiving them.
