— (Reuters) A U.S. Patent Office panel on Tuesday upheld Intel Corp.’s (INTC.O) request to invalidate a patent that was worth $1.5 billion of the $2.18 billion judgement it lost to VLSI Technology LLC in 2021.

After invalidating another VLSI patent that made up the balance of the Texas federal court’s decision last month, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board invalidated the computer chip-related patent.

VLSI has the right to appeal both rulings to the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals in the United States.

A representative for Intel expressed the company’s satisfaction with the judgements to throw out both of VLSI’s “low-quality” patents. An inquiry for comments was not immediately answered by VLSI representatives.
