Because of risks posed by hackers, developments in artificial intelligence, and pressure from rival governments, China’s security and surveillance business is now concentrating on shoring up its vulnerabilities to the United States and other outside players after years of rapid growth.

At the recent Security China exhibition in Beijing, the renewed focus on independence, thwarting fraud, and fortifying systems against hacking was on display, highlighting just how challenging it will be to get Beijing and Washington to cooperate even as researchers warn that humankind faces common risks from AI.

The performance was held only a few days after the Communist Party, which is in power in China, warned authorities about the dangers presented by artificial intelligence.
