On Thursday, a U.S. judge penalised two New York attorneys for submitting a legal brief that contained six false case citations produced by ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot.
Steven Schwartz, Peter LoDuca, and the Manhattan legal firm Levidow, Levidow & Oberman were each sentenced to pay a $5,000 fine by U.S. District Judge P. Kevin Castel.
The judge determined that the attorneys engaged in bad faith behaviour, including “acts of conscious avoidance and false and misleading statements to the court.”
In a statement on Thursday, Levidow, Levidow & Oberman said that its attorneys “respectfully” disagreed with the court that they behaved in bad faith.
