Chief Justice John Roberts of the United States Supreme Court administered the oath of office to Donald Trump on Capitol Hill. Just before noon ET (1700 GMT), Trump took the oath of office inside the US Capitol, placing his hand on a Bible and promising to “preserve, protect, and defend” the US Constitution.
The event was attended by 500,000 people. CJ Roberts also gave the oath of office to Barack Obama in 2009 and 2013, Donald Trump in 2017, and Joe Biden in 2021.

As Donald Trump entered a full Capitol Rotunda to the US Marine Band’s “Hail, America” march, hundreds of people cheered and applauded, including members of Congress, captains of the US high-tech sector, and other VIPs.
Biden and departing Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost to Trump in November, were present in the Capitol Rotunda, along with former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who lost to Trump in 2016, arrived with her husband Bill, but Michelle Obama elected not to attend. As Joe Biden and Kamala Harris approached the rotunda, the overflow crowd erupted in polite applause. Big applause went up for JD Vance.
When photos of Bill and Hillary Clinton coming for Trump’s swearing-in ceremony appeared on a huge screen inside the Capital One Arena, Trump fans booed loudly. More boos erupted as Trump fans watched former Democratic President Barack Obama arrive. US Senator Bernie Sanders also attended.
Huge shouts erupted when Trump’s children were seen coming for the inaugural event. Barron Trump, his youngest kid at the age of 18, received the greatest cheers.
Numerous tech executives who have sought to curry favor with the incoming administration, including the world’s three richest men, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, took prominent seats on stage alongside cabinet nominees and members of Trump’s family.
The occasion was also attended by Zuckerberg’s wife, Priscilla Chan, and Jeff Bezos’ partner, Lauren Sanchez. Mike Tyson, the boxing legend, was also in attendance. Sam Altman was noticeably absent from the Rotunda assemblage of tech CEOs, instead sitting quietly in an aisle seat in Emancipation Hall, watching the events on TV.

Special invitations were extended to Argentinean President Javier Milei, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Chinese Vice President Han Zhengwei, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Ecuadorian President Daniel Anouk, El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, and former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morowicki to attend Donald Trump’s inauguration.

In one of his final official acts, Biden pardoned numerous persons targeted by Trump for punishment, including former White House senior medical adviser Anthony Fauci, former Republican US Representative Liz Cheney, and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley.
